We embrace our responsibility to the environment by actively developing innovative environmental practices and programs. First Student is committed to maintaining carbon-competitive services by consistently and continuously pursuing new and expanded green initiatives. Our key climate change commitments include:
- To work actively with our suppliers to improve the fuel efficiency of our vehicles.
- To report annually on our greenhouse gas emissions from all owned vehicles and property.
- To actively promote improved energy efficiency and fuel efficiency within our business.
- To support research into transportation policy and the use of alternative fuels, staying abreast of alternative fuel developments and assessing their commercial viability.
Each year, we divert more than 7 million pounds of motor oil and oil filters from landfills. This helps reduce methane gas emissions and provides an alternative end of life for the associated materials, directly benefiting the local communities we serve.
Our carbon reduction targets are driven by our climate change strategy. We continue to achieve steady reductions in emissions while enhancing our fuel efficiencies. As of 2015, we achieved our 3 percent target emissions reduction against our 2009/2010 baselines. New targets will be set in 2016. We accomplish this through our DriveSMART and StartSMART programs.
Supply Chain Partnerships
Through our sustainable procurement programs and supply chain partnerships, we reduce our environmental impact and ensure a positive social impact. We have improved our vehicles’ fuel efficiency, reduced carbon emissions and cut waste, as well as improved the reliability and durability of the parts and products we purchase and provide.
Go Yellow, Go Green
In 2012, the National School Transportation Association recognized First Student with the prestigious Go Yellow, Go Green Award for our environmental practices and industry leadership for “greening” our school bus fleet.
