District Congratulates Transportation Provider for Safety Award

When Lawrence students board the school bus for their first day of classes on Wednesday, parents can be assured that safety is a top priority. Lawrence Public Schools congratulate the local branch of First Student, USD 497's student transportation provider, for earning three awards for fiscal 2013 based on safety, customer service, and compliance: Area Location of the Year (Western Missouri and Kansas), Central Region Location of the Year (eight-state area) and Safest Location in North America, based solely on its safety record.

The Lawrence branch of First Student's last reportable accident was in September 23, 2011. "Our immediate goal is to reach that date and mark two years, and approximately two million miles, without a preventable accident," said Wayne Zachary, First Student Lawrence location manager.

"The Lawrence school district values its partnership with First Student and congratulates manager Wayne Zachary, safety manager Lisa Hunt and their entire organization on these acknowledgements of their outstanding safety record," said Ron May, USD 497's director of administrative services. "Safety will always be our first priority in Lawrence Public Schools."

First Student transports approx. 2,500 school children who live 2.5 miles or more from their attendance center in USD 497.
