    First Student Prepares Drivers, Buses, for Back-to-School, Offers Tips for Parents

    Placing a child on the school bus for the first time can be a big step for parents, but today's school buses are extremely safe and reliable ways for students to travel. In fact, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, school buses are approximately 13 times safer than passenger cars and 10 times safer than walking to school. And in 2011, First Student, the largest provider of student transportation in North America, celebrated its safest year ever. These days, school bus safety goes way beyond flashing lights and stop signs.     First Student Awarded Contract to Provide Transportation for Nebraska Panhandle Consortium

    First Student, Inc., the nation's leader in student transportation, has been selected to provide school transportation for the Nebraska Panhandle, which consists of the Gering and Scottsbluff Public school districts. This marks the first time the districts have partnered with a transportation provider to supply its busing services. The contract is a four-year agreement beginning with the 2012-2013 school year.

    At this year's National School Transportation Association (NSTA) Annual Meeting and Convention, First Student and four staff members were recognized and presented awards by the organization for their work and dedication to the school transportation industry. In addition, Regional Safety Manager Percy Abbott was awarded the Distinguished Service Award. This award recognizes special contributions made to pupil transportation contracting.
