First Student Doubles School Bus Contract with the Los Angeles County Office of Education, Adds Alternative Fuel Buses

CINCINNATI— First Student, Inc., the nation’s leader in student transportation, renewed the contract for special education student transportation with the Los Angeles County Office of Education beginning June 30, 2009. First Student is part of Cincinnati-based FirstGroup America, North America’s largest transportation company.

The five-year agreement includes the operation, maintenance and management of special education student transportation services for Los Angeles County. The contract nearly doubles the existing fleet of school buses to approximately 235 vehicles. The additional vehicles all will be brand new school buses that run on either propane gas or ultra low emission gasoline.

Linda Burtwistle, president of First Student said: “We are pleased to be expanding our services for the Los Angeles County Office of Education. School buses are clearly the safest way for children to get to and from school, and with the new alternative fuel buses, we also will be making a difference in the environment. We look forward to continuing to deliver safe, cost-effective and efficient student transportation services for the families and school districts in Los Angeles County who rely on us each day.”

All school buses in First Student’s fleet will have high-definition GPS tracking systems by 2010. First Student's core values of safety and customer satisfaction are clearly demonstrated through regular investments in the fleet, implementation of new technologies, and enactment of stringent safety policies. First Student drivers are skilled professionals who are trained to provide the highest level of safety for the 4 million students we transport to and from school each day across North America.
